Main Activity

Designed to build goalkeeper's abilities and confidence in this situation AND to help field players to become confident in the abilities of their goalkeeper in these critical situations.

1/2 field, 6-8 balls, group of keepers (8-12) Ball served by coach to defender who chases ball toward goal. Light pressure from attacker initially. Goalkeeper is given a wide target option or can choose a long clearance

Coaching points: Communication: Commands "back" "turn out", "turn in" "away" Starting Position

Recognizing types of pressure First time clearance? Time to prepare and play to teammate? Distance/time requirements and consideration

Role of the defender: Peel out wide for support, Obstruct attacking run. Handling a chest or head pass.

If ball is kicked by keeper into striker, keeper may now handle the ball. Progress to point where decision making is more difficult by playing balls that are not to the advantage of the defender and remove restrictions from attacker.

Exercises

Defenders and two attackers start at midfield line. Coach serves through balls that defense and goalkeeper must deal with. Attackers get 5 points for scoring a goal. Goalkeeper/defenders get 1 point for successfully clearing ball over midfield line in the air. Play to 10 Exercise 5v5 (or more)

Other Games:

4 minute game For first 2 minutes, one team plays only possession. X # of passes = 1 goal Other team is attacking to score goal on real goal. After 2 minutes, Coach calls "Switch" and teams reverse roles.

Exercise: Players: 8-12 Two even teams

Object: Incorporate back pass in game like situation. Each team plays unlimited touch soccer but cannot attack the goal unless the ball is played through the goalkeeper.
